Teacher of the Visually Impaired services include:
Provide compensatory skills necessary for student(s) to access and benefit from academic activities and requirements, including but not limited to braille code(s) instruction, braille writing, large print material interaction and material acquisition.
Consultation, collaboration and coaching for appropriate teachers, staff and parents/family
Development of collaborative IEP goals and objectives with Special Education teachers for qualified students
Identify Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) skill area(s) necessary for student(s)’ independence and develop comprehensive plan for support in developing the student(s)’skills
Conduct Functional Visual Assessments for students as needed as well as participate in modifying other assessments
Provide professional development opportunities regarding visual impairments and the impact on students’ lives/learning to whom and when it deemed necessary
Technology Specialist services include:
Assessment of appropriate technologies for each student according to individual skills and needs.
Training students on hardware to include Pc, Mac, iPad, iPhone.
Training students on software, such as MS word, MS Office Suite, email, and internet browsing solutions.
Training students on screen magnification solutions to include Zoomtext, MaGic, Zooms for Mac.
Train students on screen readers including VoiceOver for Mac and iOS Devices, Jaws/NVDA/Window Eyes for Windows.
Training students to use unique tech such as braille displays and note takers, as well as portable book readers.
Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services include:
Orientation and Mobility includes teaching students with visual impairments to understand their environment and environmental concepts (orientation) along with how to safely and efficiently travel in their environment (mobility). The orientation component includes age-appropriate development of environmental awareness and concepts ranging from understanding outdoor features like a block, a mile, or an intersections; indoor features like room layout, stairs, and elevators; concepts of shapes and sizes like circle, arrow, or square: and positional, body, and directional concepts like behind you, left shoulder, how and where to stand while speaking with someone, turning right, and understanding of clock face and parallel and perpendicular. The mobility component includes training in techniques ranging from the white cane, to a guide dog, to protective techniques, to guide techniques, to operating GPS systems, to riding on public transit.
